Trace Your Roots

Experience this Exhibit

This original, interactive exhibit celebrates Dayton’s rich cultural diversity and invites visitors to connect with their own immigration story.

Exhibit Schedule:
Trace Your Roots will travel to various Branches in the Dayton Metro Library system in 2020.

About this Exhibit

In the fall of 2018, Dayton Metro Library enhanced its services to immigrants, international students, and other non-native English speakers. Dedicated NEW AMERICANS space in the Main Library, along with updated information packets at all Branch locations, allowed the Library to provide valuable resources, tools and referrals to individuals and organizations that work directly with New Americans in the community.

The grand opening of the new Southeast Branch Library this month sparked an opportunity to expand on that focus. The Southeast Branch is located in a Dayton neighborhood that was largely formed by immigrants, and is home to many new Americans today.

The exhibit is self-guided. Visitors can view at their own pace, in any order, the different interactive stations:

A Guide to Ethnic Dining, Markets & Food Trucks was created as a companion piece to the Trace Your Roots exhibit, for anyone wanting to explore the many ethnic and independent eateries in the area.

Trace Your Roots was the impetus for Welcome Dayton, Ethnosh Dayton, and the Collaboratory to work together to create a comprehensive ethnic dining guide for the region.

The guide includes maps to locate all of the listed restaurants and markets, which are arranged by geographic region:

  • African & Caribbean
